Overview
This 5-day cultural experience blends the traditions, hospitality, and natural beauty of Northern Tanzania. The journey takes you through Chagga villages at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, where you will discover coffee-making traditions, waterfalls, and authentic homestays. The adventure continues in Mto wa Mbu with cultural walks, cycling tours, cooking lessons, and a visit to Lake Manyara National Park. This trip is ideal for travelers seeking meaningful cultural encounters, local food experiences, and a taste of Tanzania’s diverse way of life.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be transferred to Moshi, in the Marangu area. Your cultural journey begins with a guided visit to Materuni village, where you will enjoy a traditional Chagga coffee tour, learning about the harvesting, processing, and brewing of Arabica coffee. A short hike takes you to Materuni Waterfall, where you can swim if conditions allow. Lunch will be served in a traditional Chagga style, offering an authentic village experience. Overnight stay in a local lodge in Moshi.
Today, embark on a walking tour through farmland and Chagga villages, gaining insight into local agricultural life. Visit a secondary coffee farm or banana plantation, where you will join in preparing traditional meals. In the afternoon, experience daily life in a village homestead by participating in cooking or household activities. Lunch will be enjoyed with a host family, followed by leisure time in the village. Overnight stay in Moshi.
After breakfast, depart Moshi and transfer to Arusha before continuing to Mto wa Mbu. In the afternoon, enjoy a guided village walk exploring the bustling local market, rice paddies, and banana plantations. A traditional lunch with villagers will be provided before relaxing in the evening. Overnight stay in Mto wa Mbu.
Experience a half-day cultural adventure that includes walking and cycling through Mto wa Mbu. Visit Njoro Springs, community development farms, and artisan workshops of the Sandawe tribe. Take part in a local cooking lesson on a banana farm and learn traditional techniques at woodcarving workshops. An optional canoe ride on Lake Manyara can be arranged. Overnight stay in Mto wa Mbu.
On your final day, enjoy an optional guided nature walk or game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, known for its tree-climbing lions, abundant birdlife, and breathtaking scenery. After the excursion, return to Arusha for drop-off, marking the end of your cultural experience.
